Meet The Music: The Foes of Fern

August 15, 2023 Hannah Lee

Meet The Music: The Foes of Fern
Hey, We are the Foes of Fern. We are Not a Ska band. We are just a rock band with a horn section and like 15 members that play very fun upbeat music.
Q. What three albums are most inspiring to your band?

Young the Giant, first self titled album. The Beatles, Rubber Soul. Pup, Morbid Stuff.

Q. Can you explain the meaning behind one of the songs on your latest album?

So one of our latest singles is actually a song that I wrote in Spanish. It is my attempt to describe one of those Telenovela's (Spanish soap operas) that are all over day time tv. The song describes a love triangle between a poor main character, a beautiful dangerous woman, and a rich doctor. I wrote it back when I was trying to better my Spanish skills and connect more with the Cuban side of my family. I still speak very broken Spanish, but writing "Mi Amor" was a fun challenge and helped me get a bit better at the language.

Q. What is your favorite thing about Asbury Park?

Summer! I love biking to the beach, running into random friends all over the town, slamming some MOGO tacos, and jumping around between all the music venues. Every day is like a mini festival in town.

Q. What is your favorite MOGO taco?

Beef Taco all the way!

Q: Where else are you playing this summer and when?

August 7, 2023 Hannah Lee

Meet The Music: Natalie Farrell
Natalie Farrell is known for her powerful, expressive contralto vocals and her eclectic mix of musical genres, including pop, R&B, rhythm and blues, nu-disco, and rock. Farrell expresses her creativity not only through her music, but also through her live performances. Natalie brings her visual dynamics to another level with her eccentric outfits, and delivers an exciting and engaging performance with her "dream team" band every time. Natalie has performed in iconic venues such as The Stone Pony in Asbury Park and PNC Bank Arts Center in Holmdel, where she opened for national artists George Thorogood & Sammy Hagar. You can find her performing at every music venue Asbury Park has to offer.

Q. What three albums are most inspiring to your band?

After Laughter by Paramore, Back to Black by Amy Winehouse, Hardwired Mixtape by Hailey Knox

Q. Can you explain the meaning behind one of the songs on your latest album?

My latest single "Mantra" is about acknowledging accomplishments rather than failures, and how far I've come to be where and who I am today. I'm proud of where I am now, and I feel like with all the hustle and bustle in today's society, we forget to take a step back and realize how unique and amazing we are. Mantra is an anthem and a reminder to make self love your every day mantra.

Q. What is your favorite thing about Asbury Park?

Asbury Park is a welcoming, heartfelt community. Everywhere I turn, there are people helping others, businesses lifting each other up, and musicians supporting each other. Every time I go into town, I feel at home. I met my husband here, created lifelong friendships, & found my voice through music thanks to Asbury Park.

Meet The Music: The Mercury Brothers

July 25, 2023 Hannah Lee

The Mercury Brothers:  Hailing from the sandy streets of Asbury Park, The Mercury Brothers have been bringing their bluesy, boozy, rock enthusiasm to audiences since 2015. I'm Wide Awake, Its Morning - Bright Eyes

Q. Can you explain the meaning behind one of the songs on your latest album?

Meet The Music: Teen Idle

July 24, 2023 Hannah Lee

Meet The Music: Teen Idle

Teen Idle is the musical moniker of Jersey Shore-based songwriter, multi-instrumentalist, and producer Sara Abdelbarry. Combining her love for crafting pop-structured songs with her talent for storytelling and lyricism, Sara writes rock music that feels like watching a movie. It’ll make you bop your head and cry all at the same time. Played on stations like KEXP, KXLU and WRSU, the Teen Idle catalogue has been streamed across the world and a new album is set to be released this fall.

Q. What three albums are most inspiring to your band?

Fleetwood Mac - Tusk; Wolf Alice - Blue Weekend; Beach House - Bloom

Q. What was the first song that you wrote together?

Since it’s a solo project I write the songs alone BUT the first song I ever wrote for the project that is currently already out was probably “Dreaming”.

Q. Can you explain the meaning behind one of the songs on your latest album?

There’s a new record coming out, but for the sake of talking about music that’s already out, I’ll tackle “Sometimes” off of the Insomniac Dreams EP. That song is about being so infatuated with someone you have a crush on that you really lose yourself in the process and ignore any red flags. And once that person shows their true colors or doesn’t treat you with the love and respect you know you deserve, you wonder why you even wanted to date them in the first place. The song talks about that process of falling for someone and being in a daze-like state.

Q. What is your favorite thing about Asbury Park?

Probably just the sheer amount of things to do and the music scene. It’s also nice to see such diversity in the city come summer time.

Q. What is your favorite MOGO taco?

Beef taco without a doubt!

Q: Where else are you playing this summer and when?

June 10 - Johnny Brendas in Philly
June 22 - Bond Street Bar in Asbury
July 21 - The Grape Room in Philly

Meet The Music: The Extensions

July 17, 2023 Hannah Lee

The Extensions: Hooks sweeter than grape soda; lyrics as sharp as a boxcutter

Q. What three albums are most inspiring to your band?

Everyone's influences vary really wildly. Becca has been on a real Monkees kick, of late. Will loves 'Thriller.' Lisa's really into Incubus, and Brian and Pete often prefer simply to snuggle without any music on. Only one time did we mention an actual album title. Your move, MOGO!

Q. What was the first song that you wrote together?

Brian and Pete wrote "Hollowed Out" together before the band was even fully-formed. But everyone else liked it so much that it ended up being Track One on our first release!

Q. Can you explain the meaning behind one of the songs on your latest album?

There's a song toward the end of our new record called "Seeing Ghosts" that's about when someone you really care about is going through a hard time and you really want to help them but you just can't. It's not possible. So you just kinda hang out and hope they find their way. And if they do, you be sure to meet them at the other end with whatever they need.

Q. What is your favorite thing about Asbury Park?

Local Summer beach days, Jim "Scene Dad" Lenskold, and probably The Foes of Fern. We couldn't pick just one.

Q. What is your favorite MOGO taco?

Lisa's coming in with the shrimpies this year! Last year, Brian hijacked this answer with the tofu which remains his favorite. But also let someone else answer, dude!

Q: Where else are you playing this summer and when?

We're not. We're retiring. That's not true. Follow us on instagram @theextensionsband for all our show updates and announcements!

Meet The Music: Hot Dress

July 11, 2023 Hannah Lee

Hot Dress: Hot Dress is a 5 piece indie rock band from East Brunswick, New Jersey. That's it.

Q. What three albums are most inspiring to your band?

"Projector" by Geese, "Room On Fire" by The Strokes, "In Rainbows" by Radiohead

Q. What was the first song that you wrote together?

The first song that we ever wrote together was "Supermodel", it's a very punchy punky track that helped us get our footing with tight instrumentals.

Q. Can you explain the meaning behind one of the songs on your latest album?

We have yet to release an album but we're dropping our debut EP titled "Take Yourself Apart" (recorded at Lakehouse Recording Studios) this summer. One of the songs called "Thank You For Crashing Your Car" follows a narrator in the aftermath of a rough breakup. It's about the difficulties of going out of the house and coming to terms with a bittersweet resentment.

Q. What is your favorite thing about Asbury Park?

Despite the history of Asbury Park's music, the thing we all look forward to the most when we're in the area to see or play a show is the food. MOGO reigns supreme.

Q. What is your favorite MOGO taco?

Our favorite MOGO taco is actually not even a taco, it's the buffalo KFC sandwich. 10/10.

Q: Where else are you playing this summer and when?

We have a handful of basement shows in the New Brunswick area but dates for our other events are still up in the air. You can stay in the loop by following us on any social media @hotdressmusic.

A band that is not afraid to try different sounds and landscapes.

Q. What three albums are most inspiring to your band?

Blonde- Frank Ocean
Helplessness Blues- Fleet Foxes

Q. What was the first song that you wrote together?

Our first song that we put together under Loveseat Pete was Harry/New Song, but our first finished / released ended up being Pajama Sam

Q. Can you explain the meaning behind one of the songs on your latest album?

Off our upcoming album, the lead single Polly was a total change of pace for us to work on, and it definitely shows. To put it simply, it’s about a person in my life who would be best described as a “wet blanket”. But we did not want the music to reflect that feeling. We’re super proud about this song and we hope you can hear it in the music.

Q. What is your favorite thing about Asbury Park?

The beach! Or just being outside and people watching. Lots of characters.

Q. What is your favorite MOGO taco?

The Korean bbq one. i forget what it’s called!

Q: Where else are you playing this summer and when?

from the date of our MOGO performance to the further months, we currently have nothing announced, but we will definitely be in the NJ area all summer so keep an eye out!

Hooper:

The band was formed by 5 musicians who are also filmmakers, artists, surfers, and creatives who set out to do one thing: put on the best damn live show...every time they play.

Q. What was the first song that you wrote together?

We wrote a song called “Nothin’ but Time” during the pandemic. Being stuck at home with nothing to do reminded us of being teenagers without a car.

Q. Can you explain the meaning behind one of the songs on your latest album?

We play a song called “Dallas” which is where our bass player and keyboard player lived as kids. The lyrics are an homage to a Waylon Jennings & Willie Nelson song, but instead of wanting to go to Texas, our song sings about not wanting to go back. Its a fun little jab at Dallas.

Q. What is your favorite thing about Asbury Park?

We love the eclectic and creative businesses in Asbury Park. In just a few blocks you have a world class recording studio at Lakehouse, delicious tacos at Mogo, amazing cookies at Sweet Dani B, a super cool hotel lounge at St.Laurent, the list goes on and on.

Q. What is your favorite MOGO taco?

Our drummer has been known to put away many shrimp tacos after a long of surfing.

Q: Where else are you playing this summer and when?

We were so excited to be play the Barefoot Country Music Festival in Wildwood NJ in June on the same bill as Blake Shelton, Darrius Rucker and Lainey Wilson. Next up for us is the MojoFestival in Farmingdale.

Jake Thistle:
Jake, now 19, has been hired to perform in Europe and across the US, and for crowds of thousands at major music events. His first studio single, Ghosted Road, garnered the Best Americana Song Award from Indie Boulevard Magazine, and the Hollywood Sentinel had this to say about Thistle's follow-up single, The Dreamer: "JAKE has it all. The looks, the voice, the talent, and even a great song here...be prepared to be blown away."

Jake has been featured on CBS News, Variety, Billboard, American Songwriter Magazine, BBC Radio, The Record, WCBS FM, NYC's Q104.3 FM, Norman's Rare Guitars, All Guitar Network, and a wide range of other news outlets. And already in his young career, Jake has played with legends like Ron Blair and Steve Ferrone (Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers), Southside Johnny and the Asbury Jukes, Jim Keltner (Traveling Wilburys, Bob Dylan), Earl Slick (David Bowie/John Lennon), Jon Herington (Steely Dan), Mark Whitfield (Sting), Tony Garnier (Bob Dylan), GE Smith, John Hiatt, Anton Fig (Warren Zevon), Severo (The Smithereens), Alex and Roy Orbison Jr, Willie Nile, many, many other greats. Along the way, Jake has personally raised hundreds of thousands for a variety of charitable organizations through an extensive range of fundraising performances, and has contributed music to events that raised millions. Q. What three albums are most inspiring to your band?

Wildflowers (Tom Petty); Late For The Sky (Jackson Browne); Dirty Jeans and Mudslide Hymns (John Hiatt)

Q. What was the first song that you wrote together?

Ghosted Road

Q. Can you explain the meaning behind one of the songs on your latest album?

Ghosted Road began less out of story and more from trying to paint a scene. I actually wrote the song under a blinking traffic light outside a house I was staying at, so the song came from wanting to convey how lonely that atmosphere seemed at that time of night. The song is a continuation of my love of writing about roads, traveling, and the overall mystery of going to new places.

Q. What is your favorite thing about Asbury Park?

Great community with a vibrant music scene.

Q. What is your favorite MOGO taco?

Beef!

Q. Can you explain the meaning behind one of the songs on your latest album?

I wrote Empty Heart about my struggle with music. The lyrics are "I'd rather live my life on an endless road than live with an empty heart". Sometimes music feels like an endless road but if it wasn't in my life there would be a void, part of my heart would feel empty so I can't let it go. I feel like people can relate to that in their own way, whether it's a passion, a person, etc.

A: I wrote Empty Heart about my struggle with music.

Q. What is your favorite thing about Asbury Park?

A: so much music, amazing food, awesome people...and everything is walkable!

Q. What is your favorite MOGO taco?

A: Beef baby

Q: Where else are you playing this summer and when?
